Helping Black-Led Organizations Lead Collective Action
When our client approached us, they had a clear mission: to create a space that amplifies and funds Black-led organizations in Baltimore. But their website wasn’t reflecting that mission as powerfully as it could. That’s where we came in.
RESEARCH
Understanding the Needs
We kicked things off by diving deep into user research. I started by systemizing existing data, identifying gaps, and crafting research questions that would yield actionable insights. Through interviews and usability testing, we gathered qualitative and quantitative data, synthesizing key findings. A competitive and market study helped us position the platform effectively.
As the project evolved, our understanding of the ecosystem deepened. Given the complexity and scale, progress was nonlinear—we often revisited earlier decisions to refine details and ensure alignment with user needs.
UX DESIGN
Bringing Clarity Through Design
We reimagined the platform with a cleaner, more intuitive layout, making it easier for users to take action. Here’s what changed
-
Streamlined donation flow: We reduced clicks, clarified messaging, and made giving feel effortless.
-
Bold, consistent branding: Inspired by the energy of grassroots movements, we introduced vibrant colors and typography that reflected the community.

WIREFRAMING
Turning user flows, IA, use cases, and research insights into wireframes.
We synthesized user flows, information architecture, use cases, and competitive research insights to identify key interaction points and user needs. These inputs shaped low-fidelity wireframes that mapped out core journeys, ensuring clarity, accessibility, and alignment with user expectations
The wireframes were then shared with the clients through collaborative review sessions. Their feedback helped us refine navigation, prioritize features, and address usability concerns early, ensuring the designs stayed closely aligned with both business goals and user needs.

MID-FI PROTOTYPING
Polishing Wireframes and Setting Design Foundations
After finalizing wireframes, we focused on high-fidelity mockups — refining layouts, defining typography, type scales, and color choices. While we didn’t build a full design system, we established key parameters like grid columns, spacing, and visual hierarchy to guide consistent, user-friendly design as the product evolved.

Takeaways
Integrating Brand Identity Within UX Requires Iteration and Nuance
Blending brand expression with functional UX required multiple trials and careful trade-offs. Finding the balance between storytelling and usability was both challenging and essential.
Designing for Culture Means Going Beyond Aesthetics
I learned how cultural context shapes not just visuals, but interaction patterns and tone. Small, intentional details can build trust and belonging when done well.
